Many years ago I went to a camp in Loretto, MN and had a counselor. Well, I think pretty much all kids who went to camp had a counselor, but I had this one in particular who said she was going to be a famous actress. I remember distinctly that her last name rhymed with an Oakland football team -- although it was an LA football team back then -- but it was spelled in a non-intuitive way. I decided (at the precocious age of 9) that I would make a point to remember how to spell her name, just in case she did become a famous actress.
Years went by and I never really thought about her again.
That is until one night in grad school, I was looking in a mirror staring at my glasses, which I rarely ever wear anymore thanks to the miracle of soft contact lens, and recalled an old camp counselor who once talked about how as an actress, she would be eligible for more roles if she didn't wear glasses and that she would probably have to get contacts soon. Then I wondered if she ever did become an actress, and so I did what any internet savvy person would do.
I dumped the name I forced myself to remember all those years ago into google and wound up here.
So... hi, from a former camper, who I'm sure you don't remember!
Erin, I probably DO remember you. Thank you for the comment that I saw a million years after you posted it. Ihduhapi forever! Also, I'm not a famous actress, per se, but I am still working. How is your journey going?

Love your column! I can relate. But you misspelled barely as barley.
Not my fault, I swear! Blame my editors!
